How to perform Salah
Steps of Salah
(1) Intention
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intention, and a person will get the reward according to what he has intended ..." [Bukhari, Muslim]
One must be aware in their mind which prayer they are praying. One must clear their mind from anything not related to the prayer and be aware that this could be their last prayer, and so try their best to perfect it.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) advised: "When you stand up to pray, perform your prayer as if it were your last. [ Tirmizi ]

(2) Takbir (Saying Allahu Akbar) means
('Allah is the Greatest')
The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The key to prayer is purification and it is entered by saying the takbir..." [ Tirmidhi ]

The Prophet (pbuh) would raise his hands with his fingers slightly spread apart, level with his shoulders, while saying the takbir. [ Bukhari, Abu Dawood ]
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

(3) Placing the Hands
The Prophet (pbuh) would place his right arm over his left arm on his chest and just above the elbow. [ Bukhari, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi ]

(4) Standing before Allah
“And stand before Allah devoutly." [ Chapter 1-Baqarah, verse 238].
"Successful indeed are the believers. Those who are humble in their prayers." [ Chapter 23-, Al-Mu’minun, verse 1-2 ].

When the Prophet (pbuh) performed prayer, his eyesight did not leave the place of prostration and he forbade us from looking up at the sky or looking around in prayer.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “It is not proper to have anything in the house which disturbs one who is praying.” [ Abu Dawood, Ahmad ]

(5) Recitation
The Prophet (pbuh) would first seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan saying:
A’zhu bil-lahi minash Shayta nir-rajeem (Transliteration)
I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan (Translation)

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Prayer is not accepted if one does not recite the first chapter of the Qur'an.” [Bukhari, Muslim]
The Prophet would then recite the first chapter of Quran (Al-fatiha),

(6) The Opening Surat al-Fatiha (Chapter 1)
*(Transliteration) *
1. Bismillahi Rahmanir Raheem
2. Alhamdu lil-lahi rab-bil alameen
3. Ar Rahmanir-Raheem
4. Maliki yawmid-deen
5. Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta’een
6. Ihdinas siratal mustaqeem
7. Siratal lazheena an’amta 'alayhim Ghayril maghdubi ‘alayhim wala daal-leen Ameen

*(Translation)*
1. 'In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'
2. All praises and thanks are to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
4. The Master of the Day of Judgement.
5. You (alone) we worship and You (alone) we ask for help.
6. Guide us to the straight way.
7. The way of those whom You have blessed, and not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray. Amen.

(7) The Excellence of reciting the Opening
Allah, the Exalted, said, 'I have divided the prayer into two halves between Myself and My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for.'
If servant says: All praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of worlds. Allah says: 'My servant has praised Me.'
When the servant says: The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Allah says: 'My servant has highly praised Me.'
When servant says: The Owner of the Day of Recompense. Allah says, 'My servant has glorified Me'.
When servant says: You (alone) we worship, and You (alone) we ask for help. Allah says, 'This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.'
When servant says, Guide us to the straight path. The way of those on whom You have blessed, and not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor of those who went astray, Allah says, 'This is for My servant, and My servant shall acquire what he asked for.'

(8) Reciting another verses of Quran
The Prophet (Pbuh) would then recite another chapter from the Qur'an. [Bukhari, Muslim]
* The Purity Surat ul-Ikhlas (chapter 112)*
*(Transliteration)*
Bismillahir-Rahmanir Raheem
1. Qul huwal lahu ahad.
2. Allahus-Samad.
3. Lam yalid wa lam Yulad.
4. Walam yakun-lahu kufuwan ‘ahad.

*(Translation)*
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful 1. Say (0 Muhammed), "He is Allah the One,
2. Allah, the Self-Sufficient.
3. He does not produce a child and He was not born of anyone.
4. And there is no one equal to Him."

(9) Manner of Recitation
The Prophet (pbuh) would recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones as Allah had instructed him, not racing or hurrying but rather in his recitation, he would clearly distinguish each letter. He would also pause at the end of each verse. [Muslim, Abu Dawaood]

(10) The Rukoo’ (Bowing)
After completing his recitation, the Prophet (pbuh) would pause for a moment, then raise his hands saying the takbir, as it was done at the beginning of the prayer, and then bow. [ Bukhari, Abu Dawood ]
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
When the Prophet (pbuh) bowed in prayer, he kept his back level, such that if water was poured on it, the water would not run off. [ Bukhari, Ibn Majah ]
The Prophet (pbuh) would not let his head hang down nor would he raise it. [ Bukhari, Muslim ]
The Prophet (pbuh) would place his, hand firmly on his knees, as though he were grasping them, with his fingers spaced out.

*Supplication in the Bowing Position*
In the bowing position, the prophet (pbuh) would say three times:
Subhana Rabbi yal ‘Azeem
How Perfect is my Lord, the Supreme

(11) Straightening up from the Bowing Position
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) would then straighten up his back from the bowing position, while raisins his hands and saying:
Sami ‘Allahu liman hamida
Allah listens to one who praises Him

In the standing position, the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) would then say:
Rabbana walakal hamd
Our Lord, and to you be all praise

(12) Sajdah (Prostration)
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), would then say the takbir and go down in prostration.
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

During prostration, the prophet (pbuh) would prostrate on seven parts of his body:
his forehand and the tip of his nose. Both hands level with the ears pointing towards the Qibblah, with arms away from his sides. Both Knees. Both feet with the bottom of the toes pointing towards the Qibblah, keeping the heels together.

*Supplication in the Prostrating Position*
In Prostration, the Prophet (pbuh) would say three times:
Subhaba Rabbi yal a’ala
How perfect is my Lord, the most High.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is during prostration, so make supplication (in this position)." [ Bukhari]
* Rising from the prostration *
The Prophet (pbuh) would then raise his head from the prostration while saying the takbir. [ Bukhari, Muslim]
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

(13) Jalsah (The sitting Position)
In the sitting position, the Prophet (pbuh) would sit on his left thigh and foot, with his right foot upright pointing his toes towards the Qiblah. [Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad]

* Supplication in the sitting position *
In the sitting position, the prophet Muhammed (pbuh) would say:
Rabbigh-firlee. Rabbigh-firlee
My lord, forgive me. My lord, forgive me.

The prophet (pbuh) would again say the takbir and prostrate a second time. [ Bukhari, Muslim]
Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

In Prostration, the Prophet (pbuh) would say three times:
Subhaba Rabbi yal a’ala
How perfect is my Lord, the most High.

The Prophet (pbuh) would then say the takbir while raising his head from the prostration and stand for the second unit of prayer. [ Bukhari ]

When rising for the second unit, the Prophet (pbuh) would sit for a short while then get up supporting himself on the ground with his clenched fists. At times the Prophet (pbuh) got up without sitting.

(14) Second Unit of Prayer (Second Rak’ah)
The Prophet (pbuh) would again recite al-Fatiha as he would do in every unit of prayer, beginning with “In the Name of Allah...”

The Prophet (pbuh) would then recite another chapter from the Qur'an.
Then we do bowing (Rukoo’) and prostration (Sajdah) as we did in the first unit of prayer

(15) The tashahud
In the tashahud, the Prophet (pbuh) would place his left palm on his left knee, clench all the fingers of his right hand, point with his index finger towards the Qiblah, and fix his sight on it. [Muslim]

In this position the prophet Muhammed (pbuh) would say:

At-tahiyatu lil-lahi wasalawatu watayibatu.
As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhan nabiyu wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
As-salamu ‘alayna wa’ala ibadil la-his-saliheen.
Ash hadu an-la ilaha illallah wa ash hadu an-na Muhammadan abaduhu wa rasuluh.

* (Translation) *
All compliments, prayers and good things are due to Allah. Peace be on you, O Prophet and Allah’s mercy and blessings be on you too.
Peace be on us, and on the righteous slaves of Allah.
I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.

(16) The Tasleem (Salutation of peace)
The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The key to prayer is purification and it is entered by saying the takbir and exited by the tasleem" [ Tirmizi ]
The Prophet (pbuh) would then salute to the right and the left such that the whiteness of his cheek was visible while saying:
(at the right side)
As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatul lah
Peace be on you and the mercy of Allah

As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatul lah
Peace be on you and the mercy of Allah

Tashahud part-2 Translation
O Allah, send grace and honour on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad.
Just as You sent grace and honour on Abraham and on the family of Abraham.
Indeed, You are worthy of praise, full of glory.

O Allah, send Your blessings on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad.
Just as You sent Your blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham.
